Basic Aircraft Electrical and Avionics Systems
by Bernard Irungu — BSc.Eng., EBK, IEK, HDip. Telecom, Dip. Telecom.
A field-tested guide to aircraft electrical and avionics fundamentals, built from three decades in military avionics, engineering education, and airline technical Mentorship — written for learners preparing for aircraft licensing and authorisation examinations.
Bernard Irungu — Author
Three decades in avionics, engineering education, and airline training.
Bernard Irungu was enlisted in the Kenya Air Force in April 1990 for basic military training, and later studied Avionics Systems — Telecommunication Engineering at the Kenya Armed Forces Technical College (KAFTEC), now the Defence Forces Technical College (DEFTEC).
After three years of theoretical and practical study (1991–1993), he completed On-Job Training and Field Training Detachment at Moi Air Base, Eastleigh, in the Avionics Maintenance Squadron and Radio Workshop, gaining hands-on experience with radio communication and navigation systems, before a further attachment at Laikipia Air Base (1994–1995).
He returned to KAFTEC for advanced engineering training and graduated as a Radio Technician with a Diploma in Telecommunication Engineering, then went on to earn a Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Telecommunication Engineering option) at Kenya Polytechnic — now the Technical University of Kenya — and later a BSc. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), graduating with second-class honours.
Alongside teaching — first at JKUAT, then as Associate Faculty at Mount Kenya University — he moved into circuit design and innovation, co-developing three patented systems with JKUAT. In November 2017 his passion for aviation led him to Kenya Airways, where he serves as a Technical Instructor specialising in Electrical and Avionics systems.
Patented Innovations · with JKUAT (2015–2017)
- Automatic Irrigation Management System
- Real-Time Power Billing and Alert Meter using GSM Infrastructure
- Real-Time Zero-Crossing Energy Measurement Meter
